Metropolis 2026 is a live electronic composition built entirely from samples derived from Gottfried Huppertz’s original score for Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927). The soundtrack has been recontextualized through contemporary electronic processes using Ableton Live. Ableton’s cue system, combined with VB Matrix routing, enabled the live generation, manipulation, and mixing of sonic material during performance. The work engages with questions surrounding artificial intelligence through the lens of early twentieth-century media. Set in the then-distant future of 2026, Metropolis depicts a technologically driven urban dystopia and explores themes of artificial life in the form of humanoid robots. Metropolis 2026 creates a link between past and present, revisiting early tech anxieties and future projections from the perspective of today.
